The Grenadiers were in the castle and the Coldstream were on the south-east slopes. The Welsh Guards were spread out along the windswept and rain-soaked ridge with standing patrols between their positions. After an intense bombardment, the enemy launched a pre-dawn attack on 11 October. The German intention was to occupy and hold “the maintenance route” to Monte Battaglia. The detailed objectives – confirmed by captured documents – were La Braiole, which was a farm in the gully, Point 647, Point 644 and La Canovaccia. The assault was made in two waves. Mountain mist, consequent confusion, determined defence and heavy counterbombardment drove the enemy back with heavy casualties. The end of the attack came when seventy-five of them surrendered. Casualties in 1st Guards Brigade were comparatively light but had been heavy during the days preceding the battle.
